Review: DANNY DON’T YOU KNOW (Music)

We’ve all had that moment in our life: the one where you wish you could go back in time and give your younger self life advice that you’ve learned now that you’re older. “Danny Don’t You Know”, the new single by Ninja Sex Party off of their upcoming “Cool Patrol” album, is that letter.

Listening to the admittedly impressive discography of Ninja Sex Party, a band formed by Starbomb lead singer Dan Avidan and Brian Wecht, you’d be hard pressed to think of them as anything other than something that Weird Al Yankovic would have done if he had gone the glam-rock route. With songs like “Unicorn Wizard”, “Attitude City”, and “Dinosaur Laser Fight”, it’s easy to dismiss NSP as a goofy, nonsensical “band” in the vein of Steel Panther. However, “Danny Don’t You Know” displays a deep, personal message beneath the power ballad feel (complete with shredding guitar riff for the bridge).

While the song by itself is fantastic, it’s the video that truly shines. With a wonderful performance by Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things and IT fame as Young Danny, YouTube personality Markiplier making an appearance in a hilarious blink-and-you-miss-it cameo, and a narrative that is strangely, wonderfully uplifting, “Danny Don’t You Know” is one of those songs that is really easy to consider another silly parody song.

From the opening scene where Young Danny has his notebook knocked off his desk by the class bully, to the energetic and oddly uplifting finale, the video for this song plays like something you would see come from an ’80s band like Poison or Motley Crue. The message it sends, though, is as powerful as it is universal: you are rad, you are awesome, and you are cool as f**k… even if you don’t feel that way right now.
