It was reported by the Hollywood Reporter that Solo: A Star Wars Story was projected for a $130M to $150M opening weekend, which would fall roughly in line with Disney‘s recent line of Star Wars movies. Though we had seen a bit of “turbulence” with the Star Wars spin-off, as it struggled in its China release with a low opening of a little more than $10M.
The domestic (three day) opening weekend numbers are in, and it’s not looking too promising as USA Today reported Solo managed $83.3M.
Disney is projecting $101M for the four-day weekend, which still falls quite short of the originally projected $130-150M opening.
This raises the question, “Is Star Wars fatigue starting to set in?” and off of a low opening it appears a small case could be made to that. Though with Disney announcing multiple spin-offs in the works, it doesn’t seem like the Star Wars train is stopping any time soon.
