I think one thing is very clear… STAR WARS is everywhere with all of the new movies that are coming out; from THE FORCE AWAKENS to THE LAST JEDI, and various others that are either scheduled (SOLO) or rumored (Obi-Wan Trilogy) to be happening. Another definite is that the latest (THE LAST JEDI) had a quite mixed reception from both fans and critics alike. So I sit here remembering– yeah, you could say I got a case of the “member berries”, but in a good way.
With the recent movies, hell, counting in even the God forsaken prequels — THE PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES and REVENGE OF THE SITH you can see how far along capabilities have come. VFX is a billion times better, stunt choreography is much more seamless and on a high skill level. Movies in general just look better, and that’s not putting down the undeniable greatness that many older movies have. It’s more along the lines of “the nature of the beast”.
That all being said, we can see the difference between lightsaber battles in the STAR WARS franchise from then to now.
THE most noticeable is the battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader in A NEW HOPE,
This scene was (one of) the most memorable from ANH, and gave this brief look into the two characters. It made us see that there was something there between Kenobi and Vader, something that we weren’t purview to and it made their character’s that much more interesting. It gave this hint of mystery, which you felt to a degree throughout the entire original trilogy since we came into the story of STAR WARS (at that moment) halfway through.
But we can see the stiffness and rudimentary choreography that the scene has, and again I’m not taking anything away from what it is. It’s more of a hindsight realization to how much the franchise can (and has) benefit from the strides in technological advancements and overall mastery of practical effects like stunts and choreography.
One of the best examples being the Darth Vader scene in ROGUE ONE,
It’s brutal, merciless and a work of beauty.
From the flawless and smooth choreography to the clean visuals, it adds to the character of Vader of why he’s so feared in the OT. At the same time, it also points out the separation between what then (ANH) and now were/are capable of. I don’t know about you, but I did feel wanting more out of the Kenobi/Vader scene after having watched ROGUE ONE. With everything that there is, like the animated series that add layers of depth to the continuity, it’s just natural to HOPE– WINK-WINK, COUGH-COUGH, NUDGE-NUDGE, see what I did there? Digressing, as usual, but to hope that somehow we could get something that adds to it.
Thanks to FXitinPost on YouTube, it’s possible,
Sure, this isn’t official in any way, shape or form, but it gives us an amazing teaser to a full length reimagining of the scene. You can already see the big strides in fluidity to their choreography as well as what I see as a callback to the Kenobi/Anakin battle in RotS (EPISODE III). It has an overall feeling to being what you expect the original scene to be like if they had access to what’s available now.
I’m left wanting more. I definitely can’t wait to see the full thing, which is to be released sometime in 2018.
