TITANS — You don’t know Dick

We learned back in March (2017) that DC Comics would be adding yet another show under its belt– TITANS. Though, there was a catch, and that being it would be brought to us (along with YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS) through DC Comics‘ “direct-to-consumer” digital streaming service. It was clear that they’re trying to buy in on the Netflix craze, and use this new series as a way to (help) launch it.

So back in August Nellie Andreeva of Deadline reported that the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES star, Brenton Thwaites, was cast for TITANS as its lead character Dick Grayson.

Now, we weren’t given what moniker he was cast as exactly, but with the show being based off of (and titled) Titans, as well as the fact that Thwaites is 28-years old, it seemed pretty simple to assume he’d be portraying Nightwing in this direct-to-consumer series. Also carrying over the fact that DC Comics currently has an on-going series titled TITANS with Nightwing as the essential lead.

Of course this all trying to “scratch each other’s back” type of promoting, where they hope that those who read the comics watch the DTC series, and vice-versa.

But on Friday (December 1st) we found out that Thwaites is portraying Dick’s original moniker, Robin, before he dons the black-and-blue suit. Bryan Smith of Heroic Hollywood brought us Thwaites first official shot as Robin,

I’ve been mulling over this photo for nearly five days. My knee-jerk reaction to it was, “Meh, why can’t we just have Chris O’Donnell do this?” The suit is very BATMAN FOREVER, and I mean, I didn’t mind O’Donnell as Dick Grayson other than the fact of him falling victim to “bat-nipples” in its abomination of a sequel, and them shafting him out of becoming Nightwing in it.

I know, I know, that was a bit of a hot take, but I have no shame– NO SHAME I tell you.

But since first seeing the photo, I don’t mind it. The suit is pretty spot on, and even has a DCEU feel to it. It kind of reminds me (design wise) of Jason Todd’s from BATMAN V SUPERMAN.

My gripe here is the fact that we’re not getting Nightwing. When I see the title “Titans” I immediately expect to see Nightwing gracing the front of whatever it is; whether it be comic book, movie or shows. I am starting to wonder if maybe this will be for flashbacks, and that they’re trying to save the (Nightwing) reveal for a promo like a sizzle-reel. Other than that, I don’t quite understand how this won’t just been TEEN Titans with only the latter of it being used to promote.

That for me is a bit unfortunate, because I do feel it takes away from the stories well be getting out of this series.

TITANS is expected to premier a 13-episode first season sometime in 2018 with the debut of DC Comics‘ direct-to-consumer streaming service.
